If you listen to Americans saying the word really, you’ll probably hear it pronounced more than one way. In the dictionary, it’s a three syllable word, real plus lee: /ri ə li/
but, in fast speech, what we really say, is a shortened 2 syllable version. Either ree-lee /rili/, with vowel ee in both syllables or “rilly” /rɪli/, with vowel ɪ in the first syllable. I recommend trying the shorter version because it sounds more natural in the American accent. Watch the video to hear the different pronunciations and practice the one you'd like to use.

One of the most common accent error patterns is changes to the ends of words. Sounds can be left off, devoiced, or reduced, causing words to be missing key grammatical information. If we are missing the /z/ sound at the end of a plural or a possessive, it can sound like an error in grammar. If the /d/ sound is missing from a past tense verb, it can sound like the present tense verb. Need more help? Get a free trial of our online courses. Target: Vowel Eh /ɛ/ Error Patterns: Can sound like Vowel A /æ/ or Vowel Ay /e/ Examples: set sounds like sat or sate. Why this matters: Vowel errors can cause misunderstandings and make your speech difficult to understand. Vowel /ɛ/ is a mid, front lax vowel.

Target: Vowel A /æ/ Error Patterns: Can sound like Vowel Eh /ɛ/, Vowel Ay /e/ or Vowel Ah /ɑ/ Examples: man sounds like men, main or mon. Why this matters: Many common words have this vowel, and many words can be misunderstood if an incorrect vowel sound is used. Vowel A /æ/ is a low front vowel. The tongue is low in the mouth and near the front.
